Description description Lunch Box and Thermos public Introduction This listing is for an extremely clean , 100% authentic , original vintage Star Wars lunch box and thermos set . This 46 year old first edition black metal lunchbox with starfield panels is in spectacular condition for its age. It comes with its original blue plastic thermos and yellow cup topper which are brand new , and have never been used . Both the lunch box and thermos are dated 1977 which was the inaugural year of the Star Wars lunchbox . The lunch box has no broken parts and no rust which is amazing considering that this particular metal lunchbox is nearly half a century old. It has slight paint wear around the outer edges of the front and back panels as well as some paint loss on the bottom, but still looks fantastic. The graphic illustrations are really bright , and display nicely . The red handle and red clasp on the lunch box are original , and look like new . The red clasp locks down as expected, and is in proper working order . The country of origin (COO) for this original , authentic Star Wars lunchbox set is the United States. Lunch Box Review In May 1977, King Seely issued a first edition metal lunch box with starfield panels along with a plastic thermos depicting C-3PO and R2-D2. This set was only available in stores for the first 7 months following the theatrical release of Star Wars , and it was one of the first pieces of Star Wars merchandise offered for sale to the public. The lunchbox came with a red plastic carrying handle and a red clasp which secured the front panel of the lunch box to prevent it from opening. The front of the lunchbox depicted an X-Wing Fighter and TIE Fighter while the back of the lunch box depicted Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, C-3PO, and R2-D2 riding in a landspeeder and being questioned by Stormtroopers at Mos Eisely Spaceport. A starfield was the only thing pictured on the top, bottom, and sides of the lunchbox . Both the top (under the handle) and the bottom had intentional manufacturing indentations which helped hold the thermos in place inside the lunch box . In 1978, the second edition lunchbox was released. This version replaced the starfield panels with the following Star Wars photos: C-3PO and R2-D2 were on the left side panel, Darth Vader along with Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia Organa were on the right side panel, a Stormtrooper riding a Dewback was on the bottom panel, and a Death Star battle with X-Wings and TIE Fighters was pictured underneath the handle. This second edition version would stock store shelves for the next several years, making the first edition starfield-sided version that much more rare. I'm sure parents probably bought the second edition to replace a rusty or damaged first edition , and threw the first edition lunch box away.
