The density of a liquid is indirectly proportional to its temperature.  As the temperature increases the density decreases.  Hydrometers are typically calibrated at 60 F.  To accurately assess the density of a liquid, a measurement should be taken at the temperature which the hydrometer was calibrated.  When that is not possible and the temperature deviates from the 60 F standard, corrections must be applied to the hydrometer reading.  This thermometer is scaled with the appropriate temperature correction for the hydrometer reading.
